Ambulance NSW Illawarra duty operations manager Inspector Norm Rees confirmed one person was able to be extricated from the head-on smash though two people were still trapped with “significant injuries”.
Only light vehicles are able to pass the scene on the Prince Highway by using a side track.
Heavy vehicles are being parked.
A police spokeswoman told Fairfax Media they were not certain at this stage how long traffic diversions would be in place.
