The group will meet at The Huskisson Hotel car park, ready to kick off the return walk to Hyams Beach at 9am to raise awareness and funding in memory of Lachlan Thoroughgood and many others who have fought brain cancer.
"My inspiration for organising this walk is Lachlan Thoroughgood and the knowledge that brain cancer desperately needs funds for research into finding a cure,” organiser Katie Brugmans said.
“Lachlan was the bravest person I ever had the privilege to know, he was a true superhero with a massive heart, touching so many in his short life and changing peoples lives forever.”
Lachlan was diagnosed with a glioblastoma, a malignant and deadly brain tumour, in August 2014. He underwent three brain surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments as well as a clinical trial when all other treatments were exhausted.
“During Lachlan's 18 month battle he fought hard whilst still managing to maintain his hilarious sense of humour, his gigantic generous heart and love of life,” Mrs Brugmans said.
“Lachlan entered heaven in January 2016 and left behind a battle for us to continue.”
The last time the group took part in the scenic walk, Lachlan was alongside them.
“At the time he was going through treatment and he was unwell,” Mrs Brugmans said.
“We are going to find a cure for this disease and make sure Lachie is still in everyone’s minds and hearts for many years to come.”
Walkers will be able to purchase merchandise at the event, they will be selling official Walk4BrainCancer shirts, ribbons, wristbands, tattoos and drink bottles.
Walk4BrainCancer is a fundraiser for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, the founder of which is Professor Charlie Teo.
Lachlan’s mother Leanne Heanes said Lachlan ran rather than walked along the path when they did it in 2014.
“He had just had his operation and did three weeks of chemo and radiation and then we were home for a couple of weeks and he was on maintenance chemo and he did the walk – well the run,” she laughed.
“He had the wheelchair but he only sat in it for a little bit.
“We went half way and all the kids stopped and had a swim, which I think we will do again this year because it’s going to be hot.”
Ms Heanes said she hoped the event would raise awareness for brain cancer.
“Not only is it to raise money but also to raise awareness and to honour others who have battled the disease,” she said.
“There has been a few people who have come to me and said that they have lost family or friends from brain cancer in the past couple of years, it’s a lot more common than you think.”
Less than three months after Lachlan Passed away, the family welcomed Imogen into their lives on April 1.
Imogen will also be taking part in the fundraiser and people are being urged to sponsor her as she walks in honour of her big brother in heaven.
