They live and coexist with humans and other animals, often just going about their business.
And as we move into the warmer months, it is important to know how to deal with a snake encounter.
Peter and Morgan Newans, have been handling snakes for just over 10 years, and provided some simple tips for people who may encounter a snake in their backyard.
“There are four more common snakes that show up. That’s the red bellied black snake, the eastern brown snake, the tiger snake, and the death adder.”
“Black and tiger snakes tend to like more aquatic environments, so creeks and ponds are places to be aware of.”
If you see or find a snake at your home, there are some things you can do to keep your family and pets safe, as well as the snake.
“Snakes are not aggressive animals, and only ever feel the need to defend themselves if they are cornered or threatened,” Mr Newans said.
“After contacting a snake handler, the best thing to do while waiting is to back away slowly, keep an eye on it, and make sure the kids and pets are standing well back.”
Peter and Morgan are widely experienced in venomous reptile and wildlife management, Peter recently gaining a Bachelor of Science (Zoology)
His fascination with reptiles started at a young age.
“I just always loved it. Going to snake shows or the reptile park, and my dad was good with animals. So I always felt nurtured and felt he was happy with my career,” he said.
So this summer, you don't have to go anywhere near a snake – let the guys who love catching snakes do it for you.
