Australian surfing superstar Tyler Wright, who last week claimed her maiden world surfing title and has just returned home to Culburra Beach, today was named the face of the 2017 Australian Open of Surfing.

NSW Premier and member for Manly Mike Baird announced that Wright as an official ambassador for the 2017 Australian Open of Surfing (AOS).
Part of the World Surfing League’s Qualifying Series, the nine-day AOS event running from February 25 to March 5, will attract the best surfers from across the globe, drawing more than 325 000 beach-lovers of all ages from across Australia and overseas.
It has been a wonderful time of late for the champion Culburra Beach surfer.
Wright is only the seventh Australian woman in history to top the surfing world, joining the likes of Layne Beachley, Steph Gilmore and Wendy Botha.
The 22 year-old had a breakout season this year, following top five finishes in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
She won four competitions this year to beat out American rival Courtney Conlogue.
Wright broke into the spotlight at the age of 14 as a relative unknown, taking out her first world tour event at the Layne Beachley Classic – competing on a day off from school.
Wright’s world title victory follows a turbulent 12 months in her personal life.
Her win honours a promise she made to her uncle Mark Morrison before he passed away in 2015, and her brother, Owen, has been recovering from a brain injury he sustained while surfing last year, which forced him out of the 2016 men’s world tour.
