Gathering on Friday, September 30, the group called for answers to the Federal Government’s asylum seekers policies.
The group called ‘Stop the Shame’ said the plight of refugees in the camps is a moral outrage.
The protest was successful in drawing Ann Sudmalis out to speak with the group directly.
“Despite her (Ann Sudmalis) maintaining the government's position which we think is immoral, she has listened to us and said she will convey our ideas with the government,” the group’s spokesperson said.
This comes after a report released by aid organisations Save the Children and Unicef, which estimates the government has spent almost 10 billion dollars on offshore processing and mandatory detention since 2013.
