BIG YEAR: Bomaderry's Talia Atfield accepts the player of the year award.

BOMADERRY Swamprats’ star Talia Atfield was named the the Women in Defence League Player of the Year, at the Illawarra Coal League presentation night at the weekend.

This caps of a hectic past three months for the 24-year-old, which she said have been the best of her life to date.

“I found out I was in the final four to be nominated for the award a couple of weeks ago but realistically, I thought one of the Helensburgh girls would win it, as they won the competition,” Atfield said.

“Luckily enough I won the award, which is even more special as it was my first year playing senior rugby league.

“It caps off a sensational and crazy past couple of months.

“If someone had told me at the start of the year that I would play representative league tag, play for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and win player of the year for the Illawarra competition, I wouldn’t have believed them.”
