Warren Rogers, 68, will face a bedside court hearing at Liverpool Hospital on Thursday charged with murdering his 61-year-old wife Anne on Tuesday afternoon.

A female relative raised the alarm with police about 1.45pm on Tuesday when Mrs Rogers failed to turn up to a planned family birthday celebration.

When police forced their way into the Links Avenue home, where the couple had lived for decades, they discovered Mrs Rogers with critical head injuries. She died at the scene.

It is understood police found Mr Rogers in a car with the engine running in the garage of the brick house.

He was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition. His condition improved to stable and, late on Wednesday, police charged Mr Rogers with one count of murder.

He remains under police guard in hospital.

Neighbours were shocked to learn what had happened to the couple, who are understood to have owned the house for decades and raised their family there.
