Mark Astley will use the National Capital Tour in Canberra next weekend as preparation for a series of championship events in October.

Astley is a stand-out endurance rider who races with both the local cycling clubs, Nowra Velo and the South Coast United Mountainbikers. He was quickly promoted to the local A grade with Nowra Velo after a storming ride to win the club’s 55-kilometre B grade road championships in 2015 and since then has displayed his endurance qualities in all manner of events.
Astley has graced the top three podium in events on the open road, the Flinders Estate course and the tight criterium circuit at the Albatross Aviation Tech Park.
He turned in another power display to win the sixth round of this year’s Access series which was a 53-kilometre road race with a strong group of local A grade riders.
Other wins this year include two mountain bike endurance events.
They were the three-hour dusk-to-dark followed by a five-hour race that he led from start to finish.
Mark raced the NSW Masters road, individual time trial and criterium championships at Orange in July without featuring in a medal position and will race next weekend’s National Capital Tour in B grade.
Two weeks later Mark will be in Griffith for the Australian Masters road, time trial and criterium championships.
Following the Australian Masters road championships, Mark will take in the Australian Defence cycling championships on both the road and in the bush.
At these events to be held in Canberra, Mark will race the road race, criterium and time trial on the road bike and switch to the off road machine for the XCO and XCC events to have a full week of racing.
Somewhere in this busy schedule Mark will race the Nowra Velo Club’s road, time trial and criterium championships in the A grade division.
Into 2017 Mark is looking forward to the Mountain bike nationals and a 12-hour solo off road event.
Local racing for the Nowra Velo Club will return to the Albatross Aviation Tech Park for criteriums in all grades this weekend. Racing starts at 9am, Optus Nowra team are duty officials.
She Rides Shoalhaven "Confidence" program is running again this spring. This gives women an opportunity to come together, learn new skills and feel empowered by increased confidence on a bike.
Delivered by Velo Club Member Lynne Vaughan the course covers bike-set up and safety, clothing, equipment, gear selection, MTB riding techniques and bike maintenance.
