Lantern making workshops will also be offered before the event, so people can bring their own to the big show.
A highlight of the evening will be a grand lantern procession for children and adults, meandering through the grounds, accompanied by music and drumming from the Dithul Drummers.
Nearby trees will be lit up with hundreds of coloured lights. Everyone is invited to participate.
Many people will arrive with lanterns they have made.
A number of workshops are being held at local schools as well as two adult workshops in Milton.
Robert Hollingworth is the co-ordinator for both the workshops and the Lanternfest event.
“A lantern stall will sell simple lanterns and LED tea light candles – with no naked flames,” he said.
“Other events at the lantern-fest will include a labyrinthine design inscribed on the grass where people will be invited to walk the labyrinth or join the dancing with the NIA dance group.”
“There will be fire twirling, video projection and lots of music, featuring a lineup of local musicians and performers.”

The afternoon will start with the regular Gaia produce market offering its usual fare as well as plenty of takeaway stalls.
Foods on offer will include lamb-on-a-spit, pulled pork, homemade sausages, pork pie floaters, laksa, Lebanese and more.
The lantern-fest will be held in the grounds of the Ulladulla Civic Centre on Thursday October 6, from 3.00pm to 9.00 pm.
To get ready, two adult lantern-making workshops will be offered in September, on Sunday 11 and Sunday 18, from 10 am – 12 noon.
The only cost is a donation towards materials, which will all be supplied.
The workshops will be held at the House of Jules Art Studio, 12 Myrtle Street, Milton.
