THE approval of the Dan Murphy’s discount liquor outlet will worsen the stigma East Nowra already suffers, according to some residents.

“There are too many alcohol outlets in Nowra,” said Leslie Williams.
“We do not need any more and definitely not one here [East Nowra]. What happened to our Big W we were promised? Instead we get a Dan Murphy’s?”
Other locals said having reduced alcohol prices would increase consumption, something they don’t want.
These fears then turn to the youth and if they will imitate what is surrounding them. This is already a problem for the area and Dan Murphy’s will only fuel it, said locals.
“I don’t understand why they [Dan Murphy’s] even want to build here. I really don’t see the point in having it. This is not the best idea. There will not be a positive impact from this,” said Myrtle Longbottom.
On the other hand there is still strong community support for the company’s arrival. The job opportunities that come with it are also welcomed. Those supporters said it should not make a difference to the area; East Nowra had been tainted long ago, they concluded.
“Having a Dan Murphy’s is a good thing. It will bring employment. If anything, the locals need that employment. Why can’t everyone see that? Why is this a big deal?” said Samuel Yorke.
Great prices and great selection offered by Dan Murphy’s seem to be the topic of conversation amongst the welcoming group.
“I see this as being no problem. I think it is a great idea that should have come years ago. It is an excellent outlet with a variety of products. It is just another bottle shop but with cheaper prices,” Jill Ponga said.
Although a bottle shop exists at the Archer Resort, “Dan Murphy’s is just a way to upgrade BWS and all should be open to that” Mrs Ponga added.
