He also congratulated the 2016 Academy Scholarship holders from the Shoalhaven City Council area at a reception held at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre.
The athletes come from a wide range of sport including netball, swimming, golf, triathlon, bowls, rugby union and hockey.
Netballer Tara Malley spoke on behalf of all athletes and explained how the academy has assisted her and other athletes to achieve success in their chosen sports.
Tara has a long-standing connection with the academy.
Academy General Manager, Shannon Fraser, said the IAS is proud of its close ties to local government and would not exist without their support.
“The support of our local councils helps us give athletes the best possible opportunities on their pathway to excellence, so they can compete at the highest level and hopefully in turn put something back into their community,” he said.
“Our programs focus not only on skills training, but also on broader life skills that help develop young athletes into well-rounded citizens and role models for other young people.”
The IAS has a close relationship with all five local councils, Kiama, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Wingecarribee and Wollongong and the receptions are a strong demonstration of their links.
