The band has a strong links with the Shoalhaven, with founding member Todd Hunter living localy.
Dragon will perform for an an hour prior to the monster fireworks display to culminate activities on Saturday, October 22.
Shoalhaven River Festival chairwoman Lynn Locke said it was exciting to have a band such as Dragon headlining this year’s festival.
“Dragon is such an iconic Australian band and with its local links through Todd it is fantastic they have agreed to perform,” Mrs Locke said.
“When we approached Todd he was keen to be involved in this free community event which he agrees is fantastic for the community and tourists to the area.”
Dragon is fronted by the kiwi singer Mark Williams.
Todd started the band in 1973 with his late brother Marc joining in 1974.
Dragon has had many hits over the years, selling more than two million albums.
In 2007 after a much needed break, bass player Todd reformed the band which has since played more than 700 shows.
Todd and Mark are joined by Canadian guitar slinger, Bruce Reid and drum wizard Pete Drummond.
Known for anthems like April Sun In Cuba, Are You Old Enough, Rain, Speak No Evil, Young Years, This Time, Sunshine, Celebrate and Dreams of Ordinary Men, Dragon was inducted into the Australian Hall Of Fame in 2008.
This year will mark the fourth time the River Festival has been staged in its current form with Mrs Locke determined to make the event even bigger and better.
“We will have lots of great and new attractions this year,” she said.
“We will be announcing some exciting events leading up to this year’s festival.”
Once again the festival will kick off with a street parade through the Nowra CBD with the focus then turning to the Shoalhaven River.
“Again there will be a number of activities based on the river,” Mrs Locke said.
“There will be various entertainment throughout the day, the riverside markets will again be back as will the art precinct.”
The popular Colour Me Fun Run will again be held as will the marine expo, with Saturday’s activities culminating in a monster fireworks display.
“This year’s festival is shaping up to be our biggest and best yet,” Mrs Locke said.
