Palliative Care Australia (PCA) is calling for end-of-life care to be recognised as a national health priority.
Palliative care provides specialist health care to promote the quality of life, comfort and dignity of people with a life limiting illness and to support their family to provide care.
It includes expert assessment and specialist pain and symptom management. Interdisciplinary care addresses the person’s physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural needs.
PCA chief executive officer Liz Callaghan said this action would acknowledge the importance of palliative care and end-of-life care as being part of life.

“It is time to shine a light on end-of-life care. We need to make sure that everyone in Australia has access to high quality care, right to the end of their lives.
“Only then can Australians make a real choice about how they want to live until they die. Ensuring the quality of life right to the end of life is important no matter what age you are.”
The Dying to Talk Discussion Starter helps people to start the conversation with loved ones and health professionals. It is available from www.dyingtotalk.org.au
