This special week gives the school’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff a chance to share their culture with art, story telling, dance and song and the land.
Special guests were invited to attend the school’s NAIDOC assembly on Monday and the school’s Koori dance troop Saltwater Lilli Pilli’s’ performed two dances and two traditional songs.
The songs were a Prayer Song and Ocean Song which was sung in the traditional language Dhurga, was also then sung in the English translation.
Well done to the dance troop lead by Joey and Justine Brown who have passed on a great cultural tradition.
The school choir also performed two songs from the Torres Strait Islands, Seree and Taba Naba in language. It was great to see students learning another language through song.
Ms Anderson and students Mya Gunn and Charlotte Ellis gave a speech as to what NAIDOC means to them. The perspectives were very different but had the same main interpretation of learning about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
The assembly was exceptional and showed the next generation understanding of other cultures.
On Tuesday and Wednesday years 3-6 visit Bherwerre Beach and Caves Beach in Booderee National Park and years Kindergarten to Year Two walked to Paradise Beach to experience and learn cultural activities. Students and staff had a great time with everyone coming away learning something new.
