Before play started at Centenary Field, there was a minute silence for former-Eagles’ junior Paul Norwell.
Once play did start, it didn’t take the hosts long to get on the scoreboard.
The visitors couldn’t handle the kick-off which led to winger Kyle Zimmermann scoring on the Eagles’ first set of six.
Blake Jones couldn’t add the extras, as the Eagles led 4-nil early.
But their lead was short-lived, when stand-in half Kurt Quinlan, with by Geoff Johnson and Steve Brandon unavailable, hit Matt Rouen with and inside ball, allowing him to score next to the posts.
Mark Brandon converted and the Jets led 6-4.
But in a repeat of the last kick-off, the Jets again fumbled the restart, gifting the hosts strong field position.
The Eagles make the most of it as centre Jones dived over, but couldn’t convert his own try, as the hosts led 8-6.
The Jets then had a chance to regain the lead but Brandon was adjudged to have dropped the ball over the line.
To make matters worse for the Jets, with four minutes to go in the half, Aaron Cumming dived over in the right corner for the Eagles.
Jones converted from out wide and the score was 14-6 at the break.
After the resumption, the lead was cut to four after just 10 minutes, when Jets’ forward Ryan James broke the line, stood up the fullback and slammed the ball down.
Brandon missed the kick and the score was 14-10.
With 23 minutes to go, Jets’ Jacob Dolan was sin-binned for dissent but the hosts couldn’t take advantage of the extra man, thanks largely to the determined Jets’ defence.
This was highlighted by Eagles prop Kane Scarrets being held up over the line with eight minutes to go.
But try as they may, the Jets couldn’t find the match winning try, thanks largely to their ill-discipline and huge penalty count against them (24-14 penalties on the game).
The Eagles, who held on to win by four, were led by Scarretts, half Scott Austin, David Stone and Aidan Menzies.
Eagles’ co-coach Adam Bezzina said a big thing for his team was keeping an attacking minded team like the Jets, to just 10 points for the game.
“The Jets have averaged at least 30 points against us in the last couple of clashes, so to keep them to just 10 points is very pleasing and something we will look to build on, that’s for sure,” he said.
While the Jets, who must regroup before their local derby with Berry-Shoalhaven Heads next Saturday, saw Ben Lahene, Dwayne Connors, Ben Wellington, Brandon and Rouen all have strong games, in the four-point loss.
