The most powerful June cold front to move across south-eastern Australia in three years will chill coastal cities bringing with it gale force winds and dangerous surf conditions.
The region’s run of mild days ended on Friday morning with clouds and showers arriving and strengthening afternoon winds to ramp up the wind chill factor.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for wild weather on Friday morning as the front moves across NSW.
Winds are expected to reach 50km/h on Friday afternoon and dangerous surf conditions have been forecast for much of the South Coast and Illawarra on Saturday.
Roads and Maritime Services encouraged boaters between Ulladulla and Tweed Heads to be on high alert with surf expected to reach up to three metres.
The Illawarra is expected to reach a top of 15 degrees over the next four days, with mercury tipped to dive as low as 8 degrees overnight.
Parts of the Southern Highlands will hover just above freezing with a minimum of 1 degree on Saturday, while Campbelltown will dip to 2 degrees.
There are also warnings for damaging winds with peak gusts of 90km/h for the Hunter region, with gale-force winds expected off the coast from Coffs Harbour south to Eden.
