The nuggety prop played the entire 80 minutes of a bruising encounter in which his side trailed 6-nil at half-time before powering home, which has seen them join Kiama, Shellharbour City and Port Kembla in second spot on the competition table, one behind leaders Gerringong.
Next week’s Jamberoo home game against Port Kembla is shaping up as a beauty.
The game started at a cracking pace, and after repelling early Jamberoo pressure, the Magpies came up with first points in the 15th minute when lock Jack O’Brien powered over the top of two defenders to score under the posts. Josh Coulter converted for a 6-nil lead.
Try as they did, the visitors just couldn’t get their attack together, and with the Magpies getting the majority of the penalties, including two while Jamberoo were in possession, the Superoos lost hooker James Asquith (illness) and second-rower AJ Hatch (ankle), leaving them with a two-man bench.
Berry’s roll continued after the break with the first two penalties, but the defence held firm.
Suddenly the Superoos attack started to fire, with half Jono Dallas and fullback Andrew Clarke combining to send centre Corey Grigg over out wide.
With regular goal-kicker Matt Coelho on the bench, Grigg calmly stepped up to land the conversion to tie the scores at 6-all.
With Berry now tiring and losing veteran Trent Burns with a shoulder injury, which didn’t help their cause, and a slick Jamberoo passing movement found space on the left again, giving stand-in winger Luke Asquith space to squeeze over in the corner.
Grigg missed the conversion, but the Superoos had taken the lead for the first time 10-6.
The visitor’s domination continued shortly afterwards when Asquith caught the defence napping to dive over from dummy-half and Grigg’s conversion gave his side what turned out to be a match-winning 10-point lead.
The match then turned into a bit of a war of attrition as the Magpies tried to get back into the game and the Superoos short-handed bench struggled, but in the end it was Jamberoo who emerged with the valuable two points.
Apart from Aaron Grigg, his brother Corey Grigg, who shone in attack and defence, Joe Rokoqo, Jono Dallas and Josh Saunders led the way, while Blake Dryden, Josh Coulter, Joe Rogers and Matt Pollard did everything they could to lift the Magpies.
