THE importance of smoke detectors was demonstrated when two men escaped a house fire in Nowra in the early hours of Friday morning.

Emergency services were called to the home in Kameruka Crescent, off Clipper Road, just after 2.30am.
Police said two men, aged 54 and 45, were woken by smoke detectors and managed to escape the blaze.
Fire and Rescue NSW Shoalhaven, Nowra and Berry crews arrived at the fire at 2.35am but the the house was well alight and threatening a neighbouring property.
A number of LPG cylinders were also engulfed by flames and venting and quick action by crews prevented and explosion.
Four crews of firefighters donned breathing apparatus to battle the blaze, two fighting the house fire, one crew cooled down the LPG cylinders while others provided protection for nearby homes which were also be threatened by the flames.
A crime scene has been established with fire investigators and detectives set to inspect the home later this morning to discover what caused the fire, which is believed to have started in the lounge room.
One of the the men was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene.
Fire crews and police said the men’s escape was a great example of how important fire detectors are.
