Don’t choke new bridge
Why block the success of a new Shoalhaven Bridge before it is built? Appearance of ‘planned obsolescence’ should be avoided. Nowra does not have a comprehensive public transport system and is car dependent. Regardless of evidence, Shoalhaven City Council rezoned and slighted Nowra’s local defence, agriculture, health industry and local heritage sites with a zoning that also discourages tourists.

Treasured old homes with much loved gardens may now be replaced with strata and/or common titled sites destined to tear the historic social fabric of the old town. And for what? The minor contribution to the national housing stock is far outweighed by the negative effect on the local economy.
Urban consolidation in Nowra cannot restore the prominence of Nowra’s town retail centre but it will increase car traffic to choke access to the Shoalhaven Hospital, the showground and the bridge.
A NSW Department Roads and Maritime Services Report, warned of the “high risk” of urban consolidation near the bridge.
There are enough objective, valid government reports for federal and NSW government to review the Nowra town zoning that threatens to frustrate the success of a very expensive new Shoalhaven bridge.

Golf course will be good
I am of no political persuasion, am not a member of Culburra Progress Association and have no connection with the Halloran Trust.
In short I am one of the silent majority who rarely if ever write letters. My qualifications are Bachelor of Building degree, Quantity Surveyor, Cost Planner and I have been the Chief Estimator for two of the biggest developers in NSW.
I have extensive infrastructure experience with the Electricity Commision of NSW.
In short I am more than qualified to comment on the proposal for a golf course at Culburra Beach.
In my long experience in the industry it is my opinion that there will be no environmental impact on Lake Wollumboola if a golf course is constructed on the proposed site. There is a letter circulating around Culburra Beach urging the general rabble who are uneducated, emotional and more importantly unqualified to object to the golf course.
Generally the people objecting are doing so based on emotion, boredom or they have a vested interest in Nowra Golf Course. I am a member of Worrigee Golf Club. and my fellow golfers (approximately 10 of them) that live at Culburra all support a golf course at Culburra.
Golf course construction would involve strict environmental controls. The objectors have no proof that the lake would be polluted from the golf course.
The golf course would provide employment and a new sporting outlet for the youth in Culburra Beach.

Fresh winds of change
Who else can feel the wind of change in Nowra? Local citizens are banding together, taking pride in our town and standing up for its rights. Congratulations to: Stewart's Hardware, who have opened up in Worrigee St in the CBD, providing a valuable and personalised service to locals; Leaf Nowra Thai Restaurant, which opened recently with a fundraiser and generously donating the profits to a local government school; the Oura Collective, a group started by local young people to help beautify the town culturally; the residents' group doing all they can to discourage developers and buyers from out of town annihilating our picturesque old houses and buildings and thus destroying part of Nowra's soul; at least two local residents who have bought gracious old houses in the old town area to preserve them from being knocked down and replaced by modern medium density housing.
Nowra is alive and well and proud. Please, can we all help keep it that way?
