Council previously resolved to approve the development at its Ordinary Meeting on April 19, but the matter was subject to a rescission motion and therefore re-discussed at last night’s meeting.
The development includes the demolition of existing structures, bulk earthworks, construction of a Woolworths supermarket, associated car parking, advertising signage, landscaping, new vehicle access points and works within the adjoining road reserve.
Mayor Joanna Gash said the development was permissible in the zone and the economic impact was not of such a degree that it would undermine the viability of the existing centres and therefore does not warrant refusal.
“Councillors as the determining body need to assess the merits of the proposal and make a determination of the application,” Cr Gash said.
“When reviewing all the reports, the development is permissible within the zone and council does have the ability to approve this development.”
“All of the economic consultants reports, provided as part of the assessment of this application, recognise that additional supermarket space is warranted and will be of significant convenience to residents.”
“The development will increase choice and supplement existing facilities and assist people in having greater access to shopping facilities.”
“The provision of a full-line supermarket addresses the unsatisfied and undersupply of supermarket floorspace north of the river.”
“The benefits of the improved convenience to the broader public, future residents and visitors outweighs the potential impacts on existing businesses or centres.”
“Council’s assessment also acknowledges that the site is physically suitable for the proposed development and acknowledges that the design, subject to some conditions, is considered acceptable.”
“The application has been modified to take in council concerns,” Cr Gash said
