Laura, 26, suffered a stroke in 2007 that left her unable to move or talk, but life-changing technology that calibrates her eyes to screen by way of camera could open her world.
At $20,000 the device is out of the families' reach but with a portion of the Shoalhaven King of the Mountain running festival 10km and 25km entry fees being donated to the family, the fundraising effort now stands at $16,000.
Phil Williams, Property Services Manager at LivingCare Nowra where Laura resides, said people generously donated to help Laura regain her voice.
“Before the event we were at about $14,400 from donations but now we’re at $16,000.
“There were people doing the event, complete strangers, who just donated on the spot when we told them what we’re trying to achieve for Laura.”
The Shoalhaven Mountain Bike Club will be hosting a major event in November and hope to raise more funds towards purchasing the equipment.
