The 47-year-old woman is fighting for life at St George Hospital, where her condition is listed as critical but stable.
She was struck by a Holden Commodore on Cook Street just after 6pm.
Children’s soccer games on neighbouring Unanderra Oval were called to a halt to allow an ambulance rescue chopper to retrieve the woman, who suffered head, chest and abdominal injuries, and multiple fractures.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said the Commodore driver, a 26-year-old Albion Park man, returned a negative result to a breath test at the scene. The man underwent further tests at Wollongong Hospital.
“[Those] mandatory test results have not yet been received,” the spokeswoman said.
The man’s car came to a stop on Central Road, with its front windscreen smashed.
The South Coast Crash Investigation unit is leading an ongoing police inquiry into the events leading to the accident. No charges have been laid.
The police unit has renewed appeals for anyone who witnessed the collision, or has relevant information, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
