In a joint press release, prior to the planned 11am official announcement about amalgamations by Premier Mike Baird, the MPs have congratulated the local communities for their fight against the move.
Mr Ward said it was a tremendous and important victory for the region.
“From day one, I staked my reputation on opposing this merger and took on my own side of politics to secure today’s result,” he said.
“On behalf of a grateful community, I extend our sincere thanks to Premier Mike Baird who has listened to the overwhelming voice of our local residents.
“Throughout this campaign there were some, for political gain, that attempted to misrepresent my position on this matter. Just as I have on every issue that concerns our region, my first loyalty is, and always will be, to our community.
“This has been a community led campaign. I would like to acknowledge Mayor Brian Petschler and Mayor Jo Gash for their advocacy throughout this process.
“My thanks also goes to most councillors on Kiama and Shoalhaven Councils who have joined with me in a constructive and sensible manner to put forward the strongest possible case.
“I also thank the many thousands of people across the Kiama Municipality and Shoalhaven City who sent me their submissions to the delegate, wrote to me with their concerns and signed one of the many petitions against this proposal.
“The support from local residents has been overwhelming and this outcome would not have been possible without their resilience and determination.”
He also thanked the chairperson of the ‘Keep Kiama Council Local Committee’ Rob McKinnon and publicity office Nick Hartgerink for their dedication and commitment to obtaining the announcement.
Mrs Hancock welcomed the decision to keep Shoalhaven as a stand-alone council from Kiama.
“I would like to congratulate Shoalhaven City Council led by Mayor Joanna Gash,” Mrs Hancock said.
“Their diligent and committed research regarding the proposed amalgamation in part led to this decision.
“This is also a wonderful outcome for our local community who banded together to provide feedback and show their support for our local council.
“I would also like to thank Premier Baird and Minister Toole. This decision is a prime example of the government listening and responding to the community.”
