Three flight crews and maintainers from HMAS Albatross aboard navy’s new Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ship, HMAS Canberra are part of the effort after the islands were severely damaged in Tropical Cyclone Winston.
Three MRH-90 helicopters from 808 Squadron are undertaking a variety of tasks including delivering aid, supplies and building materials.
Forty Albatross personnel are taking part in the relief efforts.
Using MRH-90 helicopters, landing craft and lighter amphibious resupply cargo (LARC) vehicles, aid is being moved from HMAS Canberra to the outer islands.
Lumber, concrete, corrugated iron and water tanks are just some of the materials being delivered and Australian Army Engineers are working closely with their Fijian Army counterparts to restore essential infrastructure, allowing the communities to recover as fast as possible
Immediately after the cyclone, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Australian Defence Force, NGOs and Fiji Officials coordinated relief efforts to address the immediate needs of those affected. The focus now lies on helping these communities begin to rebuild.
