The exhibition, which was featured in the Shoalhaven City Arts Centre and Regional Gallery for three months from August 2014, will be permanently displayed in the Nowra RSL Sub-Branch Hall in Nowra.
The photographic and multimedia display provided first hand and family members’ accounts of the Shoalhaven’s Aboriginal servicemen and women’s involvement in conflicts from the Boer War right through to the recent war in Afghanistan.
Co-ordinated by Shoalhaven Council Aboriginal community development officer Margaret Simoes, the exhibition detailed the proud and often little known history of Aboriginal people’s contribution to Australia’s military efforts.
Nowa RSL Sub-Branch secretary Rick Meehan said a permanent home needed to be found for the exhibition to continue to honour local indigenous service men and women.
“The exhibition was brilliant and rather than just let it go, we decided to have it permanently on exhibition,” he said.
“All the hard work had been done. It was all there, it just needed a home.
“We contacted Shoalhaven City Council and offered a permanent place for the exhibition to be on display.”
The display, which includes information walls covering each conflict and photographs, will be on display on the walls entering the hall.
“This history just couldn’t be forgotten again,” Mr Meehan said.
Keith Payne VC will officially unveil and dedicate the exhibition next Wednesday, February 17 from 10am.
Members of the public are invited to attend the unveiling and then take a tour of the RSL Hall and see some of the other superb memorabilia which is on display.
