The video footage was by deckhand Michael Muscat on the charter boat Tru-Dee V that first spotted the shark.
Mr Muscat shot the footage on his GoPro camera over the side of the boat and it shows the large shark leisurely swimming past the boat.
Skipper “Crusty” of Bermagui Game Fishing Charters had pulled up at a large coil of thick rope free floating at the south end of The Kink on the edge of the Continental Shelf between Narooma and Bermagui.
He was targeting dolphinfish under the rope when he spotted the large shark.
“The shark was doing laps and was totally passive,” he said. “It wasn’t even interested in the dolphinfish we were hooking.”
The guys on Tru-Dee V even threw out a mackerel without a hook and the shark was not interested.
The footage shows the shark swimming past the boat and the dolphinfish are also visible under the coil of rope.
Skipper “Crusty” said he did encounter a great white shark last year while mako fishing at the 12-Mile Reef off Bermagui, although not as large. They unfortunately did not have the GoPro with them that day.
And they also spotted a great white shark off Goalen Head south of Bermagui a few months ago but did not get a real close look at it.
The Narooma News also tracked down the person who jumped in the water to film the great white shark.
It turned out to be Canberra spear-fisherman Tim Knight, who also got some great footage that he is selling to a documentary company.
Mr Knight and his fishing mates also speared two striped marlin that day, including a 139.2kg pending world record striped marlin on spear.
