These kids could be on their way to catching a marlin one day and the action certainly was hot for the Bermagui Big Game Anglers Club Bermagui Bait and Tackle/Shimano Australia Fishing Bluewater Classic also on the weekend.
Weighmaster Mark Parton said around 80 boats competed coming from Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and locally, with about 80 marlin, mostly striped marlin but also a few blues and blacks, hooked and tagged. Conditions were ugly on Saturday with not many fishing, but Sunday and Monday were great. The numbers of fish were comparable to the previous year.
The kingfish continue to be erratic at Montague Island with plenty of fish just undersize and a few bigger fish for lucky anglers who persevere. There were also good snapper including a nice 56cm fish by the author of this report. Nick Cowley from Charter Fish Narooma reported afternoons were best, when the kingfish fired with the average size fish in the 80/90cm range and a couple at the meter mark on Thursday last week. “Sharks managed to get a few off us but every drop still resulted in a solid hook up!”
Up at Moruya, Graham at Tackle World reports the river has cleaned up nicely with Nathan and himself having a great session earlier in the week catching whiting, bream, flathead, leather jackets, luderick and a extremely small reddie all on both surface EBI Panic Prawns and diving Diawa Presso lures. Perch and flatties are being caught around the bridge after dark.
At Tuross, Graham congratulates VIP member Liam catching a great jewie on a Eco Gear vibe while chasing bream on light spin outfit. Whiting and flatties are being caught right down the front on both surface poppers , soft plastics and beach worms
On the rocks and beaches, bream, whiting and salmon are being caught along racecourse beach mainly on beach worms and salted pillies with tailor being caught of the breakwall on both salted pillies and Arma metal slices, while offshore there have been some great reports of snapper, mowies, pigfish, flathead and gummy sharks mainly out around the 50 to 70m, while on the shelf fishos have raised marlin and caught some great dolphinfish.
