The iconic business has been sold recently to owners outside the Rowen family who intend to continue their legacy.
The games arcade was first opened by Alf and Doreen Rowen in 1970 and later taken over by their son Glenn.
The business was sold in 1988 but bought back by Glenn in 2005.
“Owning a dodgem, as silly as it sounds was a life goal.”
Glenn grew up around Funland.
He would spend school holidays working 12-14 hour days there for his parents.
He says one of the highlights was the opening of the dodgems.
“Owning a dodgem, as silly as it sounds was a life goal,” Glenn said.
“I remember seeing real dodgems for the first time when I was little.
“I had a ride in one, and from then on I wanted to own one,” he said.
When he was 25 Glenn had dodgem cars installed at Funland.
He says that the most satisfying part of owning a local business like Funland is what he has been able to give back to the community.
Many Milton Ulladulla teenagers have had their first job at Funland, and Glenn says that he is now seeing second and third generation employees coming through.
Funland has also held many fundraisers and given out hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of prizes to community groups, events and charities.
As much as he loved the business, he says that it is time for a change.
“I’m ready to let go,” said Glenn.
“I want to travel and spend more time kite surfing,” he said.
He also told the times that he was pleased that he had peaked at the end of his Funland ownership with the business winning Business of the Year at the Milton Ulladulla Business Awards in September.
The new owners have recently added plenty of new equipment but will still be keeping all the iconic attractions.
Darren Quaide, one of the four partners in the business said that they wanted to make sure Rowen brand was honoured.
“We know it is an iconic business,” he said.
“We used to come here as kids.”
