The radiographer at South East Radiology is shaving her head to raise money for the Cancer Council’s Shoalhaven Relay for Life in April, 2016.
Cortney will undergo the great shave on Saturday, December 5 at the Wollongong Central Shopping Centre.
While she made sure to keep curly locks for her wedding just a few weeks ago, Cortny said she’s now ready for the big event.
“There’s two reasons I’m doing it; firstly on a personal level, my dad was diagnosed with skin cancer, my uncle had prostate cancer and my husband’s aunty had breast cancer,” she said.
Fortunately all her family members survived their cancer battles, but working with cancer patients has given the radiographer a new perspective.
“I see people with cancer on an almost daily basis and I understand that losing your hair can be like losing your identity,” she said.
“I’ve always been known as curly Cortny so I wanted to do this to put myself in that position and if it helps even one person in any way, that’s the most important thing.”

Cortny has already raised just over $2000 and is hoping to reach a target of $5000.
The staff at South East Radiology are also supporting the cause, forming the South East Radiology Diagnostic Dashers team for next year’s Relay for Life.
Last year’s team had 39 staff members join and this year will see even more staff pacing the Nowra Showground come next April.
Combined with Cortny’s efforts, the team is hoping to raise at least $10,000 to support the Cancer Council in providing research, patient treatment and prevention programs.
