This week's volcanic eruption over Mount Rinjani, on the Indonesian island of Lombok, has caused conditions that have been deemed "unsafe for flying" around nearby Denpasar airport.

Virgin Australia and Jetstar said the decision to cancel flights due to the ash cloud was based on expert advice from meteorologists.

"We regret the disruption these cancellations will cause our customers but the safety of passengers and crew is our first priority," Jetstar said in a statement.

Virgin and Jetstar said they would make a decision on Wednesday's flights after being updated by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre.

"We continue to monitor the situation closely," Virgin said.​

On Tuesday, Virgin cancelled all 10 flights to and from the popular holiday destination while Jetstar cancelled 14.

The cancellations follow similar disruptions in July when volcanic ash cloud from an erupting Mount Raung in East Java shut down flights in and out of Denpasar for several days.
