The girls, lead by team captain Rhianna Brown, played five difficult matches against three metro and two country teams at Football NSW’s Valentine Sports Park in Sydney.
The Southern girls didn’t start off well, being defeated in their first game 5-nil against City North.
This match saw the girls lose Brown to injury for the remainder of the tournament.
To the girls’ credit, they bounced back in the second match, defeating Country Western 4-nil.
Meredith Cheyne, as well as back line enforcer Lani Johnson and Kiegan Tasker all starred in the emphatic win.
Unfortunately, the win came at a cost, with Jazmine Zabel suffering a concussion, ruling her out for the remainder of the tournament.
The next match had Southern against eventual State Titles winners City South which saw Southern defeated 6-1 in a strong victory for City South.
Once again, Southern bounced back with a 3-nil win against City Central/West.
This win saw Southern very close to victory in the Country Cup, with their final remaining match requiring Country Riverina to defeat Southern by six goals.
Southern came out in the final match with determination to take out the Country title and came out strongly in the first half, scoring two unanswered goals.
In the second half strongly they were unlucky to have a goal scored against them. Fortunately their efforts were rewarded with a 2-1 victory over Riverina, seeing them take out the Country Cup.
Coach James Ford, manager Katrine Brown and sports trainer Rob Cheyne worked extremely hard to get the team ready for the tournament, as well as providing support and first aid during the tournament and they did a fantastic job.
Southern did the region extremely proud once again and deserve all the accolades they receive.
