Once completed the new road link will provide more efficient and safer access into the Flinders Industrial Estate for heavy vehicles and general traffic.
The project was being undertaken after council received over $1 million under the State Government’s Restart Illawarra Program.
Council received a further $400,000 towards the project as part of the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program.
Mayor Joanna Gash thanked local members, Shelley Hancock and Gareth Ward for their ongoing support during the Restart Illawarra shortlisting process and Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis for the Roads to Recovery allocation which enabled the project to proceed.
“Thanks to their hard work and advocacy council has been able to undertake this important road safety and transport link project.”
“This new link road will provide far safer access to traffic and particularly heavy vehicles accessing the Flinders Estate.”
Once completed, the existing right turn from the Princes Highway into Flinders Road will be prevented by the extension of the concrete median, meaning all vehicles travelling south, wishing to turn into Flinders Road will need to use the newly created leg of the roundabout at Browns Road.
The project is expected to be completed by early 2017 weather permitting.
