Octobra is an opportunity for the community to provide support for women in need by donating bras.
The bright pink bra bins are back again with Professionals Clyde Poulton Real Estate in Nowra collecting pre-loved bras to be sent overseas.
Karl Poulton said all bras received would be donated to Uplift Project (upliftbras.org), an organisation supplying new and second hand bras to women in need across the world, including remote parts of Australia.
“For women in third world or impoverished communities, a bra is often unobtainable or unaffordable,” Mr Poulton said.
“This is our third year of collecting unwanted bras and sending them overseas. Last year, bras were sent across the South Pacific, while others went to remote communities west of Darwin.”
Since 2013 the Shoalhaven community has donated nearly 3500 bras.
He said the group’s aim this year was to collect 1500 bras.
“By donating and recycling your unwanted bras, you’ll be helping provide basic amenities to women in need, all at no cost,” he said.
“We aren’t asking for money, which the community is often asked to donate.
“This is something a bit quirky and a chance for women to get rid of those unwanted bras.
“What we might think is rubbish, to other women it is like gold.”
You can donate your unwanted bras for the month of October at drop off bins at Professionals Clyde Poulton Real Estate, 68 Bridge Road, Nowra.
“We found in the past 80 per cent of the bras we received were dropped to the office, so we decided to make it easier this year and have just the one collection point,” he said.
If you don’t wear a bra but want to be part of the effort there will be a number of events throughout the month, including a fundraising barbecue at Hyper Hyper coffee on Moss Street scheduled for late October.
