Emergency crews were called to the accident on the Princes Highway, about 2km north of the town, shortly after 5pm.
Of the nine people assessed by paramedics at the scene, five were taken to Wollongong Hospital and three were transported to Shoalhaven Hospital.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Wayne Dunlop said three children aged under 10 were involved in the crash and treated for minor injuries, such as those caused by their seatbelts.
An 18-year-old pregnant woman, suffering abdominal pain, was airlifted from the scene by the NSW Ambulance Rescue helicopter and taken to a Sydney hospital.
“She is going to get further assessed at a trauma centre in Sydney,” Inspector Dunlop said.
Holiday traffic has been heavy in the area for most of the day.
The highway remains closed northbound, with motorists being diverted at Berry via Gerroa and Gerringong.
The diversion is not suitable for B-doubles.
7pm: The Princes Highway is now closed northbound due to a car accident approximately two kilometres north of Berry.
Stop/slow traffic control is no longer in place past the accident site.
Northbound motorists are now being diverted at Berry and can travel through Gerroa and Gerringong to rejoin the Princes Highway.
This diversion is not suitable for B-doubles.
Southbound motorists are able to pass the accident site but should exercise caution, with emergency services and traffic crews at the accident site.
6.45pm: One lane of the Princes Highway has reopened at the site of a car accident about 2km north of Berry.
Traffic is taking turns to pass the accident scene under stop/slow traffic control.
Motorists should expect delays and allow plenty of additional travel time.

5.45pm: An accident has closed the Princes Highway in both directions 2km north of Berry.
Initial reports suggest two cars have collided and nine people are being assessed by paramedics.
The NSW Ambulance Rescue 24 helicopter has landed at the scene.
Light vehicles are advised to travel via Gerringong, Gerroa and Bomaderry.
Holiday traffic was already heavy in the area. Motorists have been asked to avoid the area and delay their trip.
The NSW Transport Management Centre says it is unknown when the highway will reopen.
