Could we possibly, or have we ever had a better start to spring?
So the fishing’s a little bit slow in some areas, mainly due to the dirty water from the flash flood.
But when it comes down to it, it’s all about just being out there and giving it a go.
Am I right? Off course I am!
It’s comes back to the old saying, fishing in a place like this a fish is a bonus.
Ok so what’s happening where?
Where can you take the kids for the school holidays?
Well before the flood, both the river and the Basin were showing signs of it being a pretty good start to the flathead season, with a few nice fish being caught in both systems.
Now with the water warming up and starting to clear, the next two to three weeks should tell the story and hopefully produce some cracking specimens, which generally this time of the year is known for.
If you are fishing either of these systems from a boat, please still proceed with caution on the water, as there is still plenty of debris, some just under the surface and not visible, until it’s too late.
In the lower river, around Greenwell Point, there has been a good run of smaller flatheads around the 40 to 50cm mark.
These are great fun and not too hard to target with the kids.
The canal still has a few estuary perch and small jew, if you can find somewhere to get out of the current or fish that 30 minutes of slack water, on the tide change.
For the bass fishos, here’s a hot tip, do not follow me, with two trips now for nil result.
Faltrock Dam was my latest effort, as per Coolondel and I think the water was still a little dirty in Flatrock.
I’m itching to get my first fish of the season, especially now that Leslee and myself are entered in the McCallums Tackle World friendly spring bass competition, with $350 worth of bass lures up for grabs, which might come in handy, after losing a couple between us on the weekend.
If you are interested in this friendly competition, check out the Facebook page at McCallums Tackle World or call into the shop for more details.
It should be a bit of fun and all you have to do to enter, is be a current VIP club member or become a VIP club member of McCallums Tackle World, purchase any bass lure from the store, put your name down and that’s it, you’re in the competition.
Off the rocks and beaches, there have still been plenty of salmon for the lure and pillie tossers, as the rocks are still fishing really well for blackfish and drummer.
For the blackfish, cabbage is the preferred bait while the drummer are taking fresh peeled prawns or bread fished in a bread burley trail.
Squiding in Jervis Bay is another great option for taking the kids out during the school holidays, with the southern side producing some good numbers.
Just watch the squid as they bring them to the boat or you could end up with a face full of ink. Enjoy this great weather while it lasts.
Be good and stay safe,
Johnny out.
