WHEN Tom Baker was cast as Doctor Who, costume designer James Acheson asked knitter Begonia Pope to knit a scarf for Mr Baker. She inadvertently used all the wool resulting in a scarf that was about six metres long.

These are the sort of Doctor Who facts on offer while visiting the Creative Moments exhibition at the Shoalhaven Arts Centre over the past month.
The annual exhibition wrapped up on Saturday, but during this year’s exhibit guests were invited to sit and knit as part of a communal art work which resulted in the creation of a Doctor Who-like scarf.
Organiser Maggie Cooper said the scarf knitting exhibit had been very popular.
“The scarf has reached at least three metres,” she said.
“It has been a wonderful conversation starter. Many conversations have started about knitting, and the items folks have knitted and worn over the year.
“It has also attracted people who had not knitted for ages. They took up the needles again and got back to it,” she said.
Knitter Penny Rushby-Smith from Gerringong contributed to the scarf. She thought it was a nice idea for the community to take part in.
“It’s just nice to take a moment to sit down and contemplate surrounded by all this art and craft,” she said.
“I wasn’t sure if it was going to be popular or not. I like interactive things and it seems others do to.
“I’ve heard some amazing stories from people who are fans of the Doctor Who series. I’ve learned so much about the Doctor.”
