Hearing loss is estimated to be the second most prevalent health condition in Australia after vision impairment, with over 3.6 million Australians estimated to be currently living with a hearing loss.
South Coast residents are encouraged to take action regarding their hearing health and participate in a free hearing screening conducted by consultants to check if their hearing age corresponds with their chronological age.
National Hearing Care senior audiologist Jacy Fellows said researchers had compared average hearing ability and age.
“The concept of hearing age is very relatable – people of all ages are exposed to risk factors that can affect their hearing – some more than others,” she said.
People with untreated hearing loss are often faced with serious consequences, ranging from disadvantages at work, relationship problems and social isolation, which in some cases can lead to depression.
Free hearing checks are available at Terry White Chemists in Shoalhaven on selected days throughout September.
