“It probably wasn't my best tournament however I felt that I played my part for the team when needed, which fortunately enough got us over the line,” Mackay said
“In previous years, I've played in the midfield so my job was to score and assist scoring goals but this year I took on a new role of playing defence, which changed my role in the team.
“We were lucky enough to have no goals against on short corners, which went a long way to winning the championship.
“Even in the final, we didn't concede a goal, which was a major aim for us as a defensive unit.”
Being selected into the team means the 22-year-old will leave to Hong Kong in March next year, before to Japan in April.
But this is the first time Mackay will have the honour of donning the green and gold.
“I was lucky enough to make the under 21s side which travelled to Fiji in 2011 and 2013 which was a great experience,” he said.
"After not nominating last year, I was lucky enough to gain selection after this championship ready for the tour next year.
“On a personal level, making this team is one of the highest honours of my career.
“There is something about wearing the Australian kangaroo and emu on your chest, which is hard to replicate.
“Obviously winning medals with club and state teams in awesome in a team environment but on a personal level, I think all athletes, no matter the sport, would love to put on the green and gold.”
Details have yet to be confirmed about the tour, but Mackay believes there will be six to eight games against local sides and potentially the Japanese national side.
Before that though, Mackay has his eyes set on competitions closer to home.
“This coming weekend I'll be playing for Moorebank/ Liverpool Hockey Club in the Sydney Premier League finals, where we will be hoping to move into the grand final in two weeks time,” he said.
“Then on the Sunday, I'll be playing for University of Wollongong first grade against Albion Park in the semi final.
“Both are tough games and should make for some exciting action.”
