The centre in Scenic Drive won the International Health Project at the Design and Health International Academy Awards in Hong Kong.
The centre took out the top award for designers Hassell.
It’s been a successful few weeks for Hassels, with the centre’s design also winning the coveted Premiers Award at the Australian Institute of Architects NSW awards.
That was selected by the NSW Government Architect.
The centre was also commended in the public architecture section.
Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre director of cancer services Anthony Arnold was delighted with the centre’s design success.
“I have always said this was a stunning centre and these awards just validate that,” he said.
“It is a stand-out centre. A fantastic building and surrounds, its design and function.
“This success is testament to the architects and staff involved with the design and fit out to get it where it is today – a world class unit.”
The project’s lead designer, Peter Monckton of Hassell, said the centre had been designed to make the most of its stunning site on the banks of the Shoalhaven River.
“We were just blown away by the possibilities of the exceptional location and we set out to incorporate that beautiful, calming environment as much as we could while causing the least amount of disturbance to the site,” he said.
“We wanted to de-institutionalise the centre so it is as comfortable, easy and dignified as it can be for patients and their families, given the stress and emotions they are dealing with as part of the cancer experience.”
