Lighthouses hold a special place in the hearts of many Shoalhaven residents, and the heritage weekend has helped educate many visitors to the area about our maritime heritage.
Those who take the rare chance to tour the lighthouse at Point Perpendicular on Saturday or Sunday will be transported back in time from the moment they step over the threshold. It’s an adventure well worth taking.
Another wonderful aspect to this weekend is the photography opportunity.
For inspiration we’ve run an image by Joanne Paquette on page 3. She photographed Point Perpendicular lighthouse last year under a night sky and plans on returning this weekend.
“It’s just magic,” she said.
“The sound of when the lighthouse goes around is incredible, and you can see the beam light up the other side of the bay.
“It’s just magic, it has a very special vibe,” she said.
This weekend Ms Paquette has her fingers crossed for a meteor shower while photographing the lighthouse.
Even if you’re not interested in lighthouses, a visit to Point Perpendicular is good for your health. The walking, the fresh winter air and the incredible views will leave you feeling alive.
Lighthouses of Australia vice president Ian Clifford said he hoped the weekend would prompt people to think about the importance of local maritime history.
“I hope people think of maintaining these valuable pieces of our maritime heritage before they are lost,” he said.
