The Coffs Harbour Council logos on vans being used by the contractors installing the security system raised questions from a number of locals.
The observations were accurate – Coffs Harbour City Council is installing the cameras.
Shoalhaven City Council director of Corporate and Community Craig Milburn, who previously worked at Coffs Harbour Council, said his old employer had its own telecommunications and technology group that installed equipment for councils and companies around the state.
“Coffs council technology department wins contracts to do this sort of thing in other areas and has already installed the security system cameras in Bomaderry,” he said.
“Often they still have to compete on price, but because they are local government we don’t have to go through the tender process, which saves time.
“We got quotes for design from Coffs Harbour and another company that can work locally, and Coffs got the contract.”
Mr Milburn said the project included six of the latest technology day and night cameras.
“The system is being installed with the optionto expand in the future, to add more cameras depending on funding.
“Our first rollout will be cameras around the front of the shopping area but there is an option to expand out the back in the future.
“We are also looking into mobile cameras which could be used at major events, or in trouble hotspots,” he said.
