For his eighth birthday he has wished for a back scratch and a slice of horse-friendly cake. His future goals are to do well in the NSW state championships in September and make the 2020 Olympics.
Mr Des’s rider Alycia Targa said a horse’s birthday was particularly important for performance horses under the age of 10 to gauge their training.
“August is the start of the breeding season, so many will aim to have their horses foaled after August 1,” she said.
“The horses’ birthday means competitive horses would look to going up an age group and strive for the next stage in their careers.
“I celebrate the August 1 birthday with all the horses, but I also like to celebrate individual birthdays.”
Mr Des’s official birthday is on December 8.
