There is renewed excitement around the Shoalhaven Riverbank restoration project, something West Nowra resident Charlie Weir was the face of until recently.

Mr Weir handed the project over to Cambewarra resident Peter Jirgens who enlisted the help of 21 people on Tuesday for a working bee.
“This is a wonderful turnout, and it’s a wonderful day,” Mr Jirgens said walking along the bank of Numbaa Island surrounded by activity.
“We split into five groups and removed lantana, filled and laid out sand bags, picked up rubbish, moved fences and prepared the area for our next working bee in spring.
Mr Jirgens hopes to get at least as many people along in spring to help with a mass mangrove planting.
“It’s enjoyable work, but it’s also a social thing to do,” he said.
Seth Lawrence was amazed at the work Mr Weir and others had done previously.
“I’ve taken some time off work to come and do this with my dad. I grew up in Nowra and used to swim in the river, but as a kid you take it for granted,” he said.
“It’s great to be able to help out. This river is so important to Nowra and it’s something we all need to look after,” he said.
