September marks the start of ticks’ prime season, particularly along the east coast of Australia.
A recent study found there was a cluster within the Shoalhaven with six times more cases reported last year than expected. The South Coast’s natural, low, leafy vegetation, scrub, high humidity and rainfall is an ideal habitat during spring for deadly paralysis ticks.
Tick paralysis affects more than 20,000 domestic pets each year and in extreme cases leads to death.
Pet owners are advised to search their pets on a daily basis by running their fingers through the coats of their animals, remove ticks using tweezers close to the skin while twisting and pulling to fully remove the head without releasing toxins and apply tick preventative products to your animal as directed by your local veterinarian.
