Narrell Brown, who has organised the Let’s Yarn Bomb Nowra group, has called for people to knit or crochet something warm for the homeless.

It can be beanies, scarves, jumpers, rugs or whatever someone can create.

The finished products can be left on the fence of the Manse building, on the corner of Kinghorne and North streets, Nowra on Saturday, August 1.

Ms Brown said her heart went out to the homeless.

“Compared to the less fortunate – I am lucky. I have a home, a car and can pay my bills,” she said.

Ms Brown said anybody, if their situation changed, could end up being homeless and in need of support.

“I think many people in the community wanted to do something to help,” she said.

The Sanctuary Point resident, who has only just started learning how to knit, put up a Facebook post about her Let’s Yarn Bomb Nowra idea.

“I thought only half-a-dozen of my friends would respond but overnight 200 responded,” she said.

“The response was amazing and it was something I did not expect.

“At first we, my friends, had a challenge among us to make the longest scarf but then we decided to make something for a better reason – like helping the homeless.”

She is not expecting works of art – all she wants are items to keep people warm.

Sarah Pride has offered to teach people how to knit at the Nowra Library on Thursday, July 23 from 11am to 2pm.

The finished products will be donated to the Homeless Hub in 27 Junction Street, Nowra.

Shoalhaven City Council is supporting the project.
