This will be the 11th year that The King of Waltz and his famous 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra have presented this traditional concert series in Rieu’s beautiful hometown in the Netherlands.
The maestro will work his magic as Maastricht’s medieval square - the Vrijthof - is dramatically transformed into a romantic open-air concert venue with dazzling light shows, spectacular fireworks and sublime music.
Internationally, the event will be shown on around 1500 cinema screens in around 40 countries including the UK & Ireland, USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Russia, The Netherlands, Germany, Iceland, Romania and France.
The Maastricht concerts are Rieu's most popular concerts of the year and 2015 is shaping up to be his biggest and most spectacular ever.
“I am so delighted that my hometown Maastricht concert will once again be coming to cinemas in July,” says Rieu.
“It’s going to be fantastic fun - and I can promise you it will be a musical experience to remember. If you can’t join us in Maastricht, we will come to you, in your local cinema.”
As always, the concert will feature many notable guest artists and soloists, including Brisbane-born soprano Mirusia Louwerse and Tasmanian-born tenor Gary Bennett, who has been performing with Rieu for 10 years.
Thirty year-old Louwerse, who Rieu calls ‘The Angel of Australia’, will be a guest performer at the Maastricht concert. She first performed in Rieu’s summer concert in 2007 and has every year since, except 2012.
Louwerse was the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Dame Joan Sutherland Opera Award, in 2006 aged 21. She has over 21 million hits on YouTube for her performance of Schubert’s Ave Maria.
Bennett grew up in Devonport and studied and worked in Hobart (physics and mathematics at University of Tasmania) before moving to London to further his singing studies. During this time he won a scholarship to the National Opera Studio. After auditioning for the late Sir John Pritchard he moved to Germany to join the Cologne Opera Studio.
In 2005 he was engaged by Rieu and has been touring the world with him since then as one of the three Platin Tenors, with appearances in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Holland, USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, South Africa and Australia.
