At 7am on Sunday the neighbour noticed the timber and weatherboard home, Rose Cottage, at the corner of Forsyth Street and Terara Road had smoke coming from the roof.
He rang Fire and Rescue, grabbed a garden hose and tried to put it out as it was near some gas bottles.
Nowra and South Nowra brigades arrived and quickly stopped the fire spreading from beyond the bathroom which was destroyed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but not suspicious.
The home’s owner was away at the time.
