The feisty 24-year-old journalist said having a month without alcohol would be a challenge but one she was up for.
“There are a few reasons I’m taking part in Dry July,” she said.
“The main one is to actually raise money for the Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre.
“Every person out there knows someone who has been touched by cancer.
“I have had friends who have passed away and I just wanted to do my bit to help raise money for research into cancer.
“I’m also concerned about young people’s addictions, which has been a massive issue, especially in the local media of late with stories of ice addiction and sometimes that can start with something as simple as alcohol.
“I think it is an important message to send to young people – you can have a good time without drinking or other things.”
You can support Jess’ efforts on her Dry July page (https://au.dryjuly.
com/profile/jessicalong) or even sign up yourself for the challenge.
“I’ve never done anything like this before but registering is very simple. You just put in your name, who you want to support and share it on social media,” she said.
And while “Golden Tickets” which allow you to have a night off if required are available, although they cost extra donations to your charity, Jess said she won’t be needing one.
“It will be tough, especially at social events where people often encourage you to drink but I know I can last a month,” she said.
“I’ll be drinking a lot of tea and coffee instead.”
