Police say the 58-year-old victim did not know two men who dragged him out of his vehicle, which was stopped at a red light in Ryde, and punched him up to 20 times on the head on Tuesday afternoon.

The attack left the man in Ryde Hospital with cuts to his face and severe bruising.

A NSW Police spokesman said the man was driving a silver Kia sedan along Lane Cove Road, near the intersection with Bridge Road, when he pulled up at a set of lights about 3.50pm.

A white Toyota Hilux ute also pulled up at the lights, immediately next to the Kia.

Motorists who saw the attack and who called triple zero said two men, thought to be aged in their mid 20s, got out of the ute and dragged the Kia driver out of his vehicle.

The pair then punched the man repeatedly on the head, before they left him lying injured on the road, got back into their vehicle and drove away.

A NSW Police spokesman said the injured driver did not know his attackers. The spokesman could not say whether the drivers of the two vehicles had been involved in any dispute on the road immediately before the assault.

Officers from Ryde Local Area Command are investigating the attack, and have appealed for witnesses to contact police.

In particular, they are appealing for anyone who may have recorded the assault on their mobile phone or a dashboard camera to come forward.

Police described the offenders only as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, and aged in their mid 20s.
