Violent death, says Michael Winterbottom, is always in front of us. By which he means representations of it: detective fiction, true crime narratives, murders that are the staples of TV news and media reports. "But why do we focus on the mechanisms of death, the violence, detection, the perpetrator, why don't we think about what's emotionally important?"
